Ten Loiper members had a wonderful trip to Sweden. Nearly a year in the planning, some of us had fond memories of our last northern-Norway Lyngen Alps trip in 2017. This time we went with Mountain Spirit and stayed for a week on the NW side of the Lyngen peninsular doing day trips with Wolfgang and his assistant guide Pere.
Neil, Jon, Keith, David, Alan, Tim and Penny, and Peter and Alison (9 of us) managed a warm-up week in northern Sweden, staying at the hotel in Riksgransen, close to the Norwegian border. That gave us the option of skiing on piste at Riksgransen, or day touring from there, or from nearby Bjorkliden which was just a 40 minute drive away. No excuse for not being fit for our following week in Lyngen!
At the end of our first week we drove up to Tromso, where we picked up Ros from the airport and then met up with our two guides for the transport to our accommodation in Lyngen (two adjacent lodges, with 5 of us joining Wolfgang in one and 5 with Pere in the other). The accommodation worked out really well. We did most of the cooking in Pere’s lodge whereas, in Wolfgang’s lodge, it was mostly done by him. The skiing locations were typically no more than 30 to 40 minutes away and easily accessible in our two minibuses.
The skiing was pretty mixed – we had all kinds of snow! Generally on the higher slopes the snow was in good condition and most of us managed some good telemarking. On some of the lower slopes the snow was quite challenging and sometimes icy or heavy or crusty! Overall it was a super two weeks, with great camerarderie.
